About:

The One School, One Book initiative at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District touches all subject areas, including physical education which recently hosted a walkathon fundraiser.
It was the culminating event of this year’s study of Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing.” Every student and staff member received a copy of the book, and numerous activities and classroom discussions were held throughout the year, including a visit by the author in December.
During physical education classes on May 31 and June 1, students walked for about a half-hour and also were able to make a $586 donation to the Massapequa-based Yes Community Counseling Center. Teacher Ed Hoffman said that each year the school chooses an organization that fits into the theme of the respective book. The main character in “The Seventh Most Important Thing” is a young man who needs guidance and counseling to make good decisions.
Mr. Hoffman added that students at Berner learn the value of giving back to their community and have many opportunities to do so through fundraisers, charitable drives or their participation in service-based clubs.
